When using Lotus Notes, if you want to save chats from embedded Sametime, you can either save them in your mail file (shows in Chat History) or locally (on your computer).

Saving in Chat History: Pros and Cons

Pros: If you save chats in Chat History, then it's much easier to view and search for them. Just click Chat History in your mail navigation.

Cons: However, it also takes up space in your mail file, which could cause you to go over your mail quota if you don't archive often enough.

Saving to your computer: Pros and Cons

Pros: If you save chats to your computer, it doesn't take up space in your mail file, so you're less in danger of going over your mail quota.
Cons: It's a little harder to view and search for chats, depending on where you save them. If you save them in the default Sametime Transcripts folder, you can can click Tools > Sametime > Open Chat History.

If you saved them elsewhere on your computer, you have to find and open that folder as you normally would.

How to set where your chat transcripts are saved

  1. From Notes, click File > Preferences.
  2. Click the plus sign (+) next to Sametime and then click Chat History

  3. Choose whether to save chats to your mail file (shows in Chat History) or to local file (saves on your computer).

If you save chats to a local file, you can leave the default folder (SametimeTranscripts), which lets you view chat history from Tools > Sametime > Open Chat History, or you can choose a different location to save chats.
